EXERCISE: THE LEGEND OF THE SIRENS VIEW
ü  Read the legend of the sirens. Use dictionary if it is necessary.
ü  Complete the chart according to legend elements

The legend of the Sirens (1)

According to Greek mythology the sirens were fantastic creatures with half of the body in the form of bird and half woman. They were companions of Persephone(2) and when it abducted (3) by Hades, unable(4) to save her in retaliation(5) for what the mother of Persephone, the goddess Demeter, transformed it into a hybrid, half woman and half fish. They lived on the island(6) of Artemis and had a melodic singing like birds, extremely attractive, seductive, calling the attention of the sailors(7), warning them of the hidden charms of the underwater world, cheating and to make them fall into their trap and devour.
In the Odyssey, the Greek author Homer relates that when the ship Ulysses sailing off the island Artemis, he led his crew (8) with wax gourd their ears not to hear the seductive siren song and fall into evil charms. While he could not tolerate their curiosity and planned a strategy, tied to the mast of the ship and ordered not to let him loose for nothing. Faced with this frustration sirens drowned jumped into the sea. (9)
